When I found out that one of the Pinterest Predictions for this year was to create a car getaway, aka a third living space in your car, I was stoked! Why? Because one— I desperately need to fix-up my ten-year-old Honda Fit, and two—I was famous for spending alone time in my car on my lunch breaks.

This started because a good friend of mine used to take his lunch break in his car. I thought this was hilarious, and I asked him what he did to pass the time. He told me he enjoyed eating his lunch then taking a nap in his car. Then he’d head back to work.  A few years later, I found myself heading to my car on my lunch breaks to take a time out for myself. I wasn’t trying to be rude; I just needed some time to decompress without engaging in the break room’s casual chitchat. It helped me rest and recharge for the rest of the day.

My goal over the next couple of months is to pimp my ride. Ha! Forgot about that one, didn’t ya? ;) If you’re trying to prevent yourself from spending money on a new vehicle and are looking to revamp your current car check out these fun ideas to create the perfect getaway space!

Why this is the year to create your getaway car

As I said, Pinterest Predicts this to be the year of the car man cave or she cave in my case. It will be known as the third living space and car date night ideas are on the rise too. Another reason is that due to the pandemic, more people will be traveling by car to reduce exposure from public transportation.

My brother is a major gearhead and has built numerous engines for muscle cars over the years. We’re from a small town, so Friday nights meant cruising the strip and uh em, well drag racing. So, I guess I hold a special place in my heart for a decked out supercharged beast.

How to make the perfect getaway space in your car

The best thing about making your car your third living space is you can make it whatever you want. When it comes to the perfect getaway space, here are a few ideas to get you started.

Boomin Sound System

Remember the good olé’ days when you had that booming sound system in your car. I scored a sweet pair of 15” Audiobahns while working at a pawn shop in Florida. This system was originally from Best Buy and was over $600 brand new. You don’t have to buy an epic system new but be sure you have it tested out before you buy it.

You can find subwoofers, amps, cd players (if you’re old school like me), and other car audio at Pawn shops, eBay, and Amazon. Depending on how much you’re budget allows, you may want to opt for a better brand when it comes to your car audio system. Rockford Fosgate, Audiobahn, and Kicker tend to have high-quality sound and seem to last longer in my experience anyway.

Vibey Lights

Of course, when it comes to your new car getaway, you need a little mood lighting. Vibey lights are also on Pinterest’s predictions list this year! You can install interior LED lights that pulse to the rhythm of your favorite songs! My hubby installed some interior lights that turned on with a switch to my audio system. Don’t forget to add some epic glow to the outside of your ride with this Korjo Underglow light kit.

Entertainment System

Now that car date nights are on the rise, an entertainment system in your new third living space is a must! Hanging in your revamped ride watching your favorite flicks is the perfect touch to your car getaway space. Check out this Boss Audio Systems Double Din DVD Player for just $99! Revamp your interior

Depending on how well you’ve taken care of your car will determine if this is a need for your getaway space. If you’re driving around a ten-year-old car like me, then your ride probably needs new interior. This can make your whole car feel new. Sometimes you can find replacement interior for your vehicle on eBay.

If your interior isn’t completely ragged out, you can always opt for some new floor mats, and seat covers instead. If you have pets, then check into a heavy-duty seat protector for your back seat. Trust me; I wish I would have done this years ago.

Car Accessories

There are many ways to customize your car’s interior to make it the perfect getaway space that fits your personality. At one point, my car was covered in skull decor. I had skull seat covers, floor mats, etc. I even had a skull gear shift that lit up-that was awesome. The point is to make your third living space an expression of you, so you enjoy it.

If you work remotely, check out this steering wheel laptop desk! You can head to the park or somewhere different to get out of the house for a change of scenery! It can also be used to eat your lunch on-so that’s cool too.

Have a car date night

There are a ton of at-home date night ideas to do, but you can also start having car date nights! Pack a lunch or grab some dinner to go and head somewhere romantic. Catch a drive-in movie, or use your new entertainment system to watch a movie in your drive-way! There are so many fun car date ideas to do that you and your partner will love!

Enjoy your new getaway space

Creating a third living space in your car can be a budget-friendly getaway spot. Sometimes we just need a change of surroundings, and this a perfect way to do that. Plus, it’s an excuse to fix up your car, so you aren’t tempted to go out and buy another vehicle. Basically, revamping the vehicle, you already have can save you money on a car payment. Remember to shop around for the best deals on your car accessories to save money!
